Abby: Academic Portfolio in Nutrition & Dietetics

Undergraduate at Auburn University | Aspiring Registered Dietitian

My path to becoming a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist began in an unexpected place, pharmacy school. For two years, I immersed myself in a curriculum centered on medications, mechanisms, and disease management. While I gained a deep respect for the role of pharmacists, I also realized that I felt disconnected from the work. I found myself drawn less to pharmacotherapy and more to the conversations about prevention, lifestyle, and long-term health outcomes. Over time, it became clear that I wanted to be on the front end of healthcare helping people prevent disease, improve their quality of life, and understand their bodies through nutrition. Leaving the pharmacy program was one of the most difficult decisions I have made, but it ultimately led me to the field where I truly belong.

Transitioning into the Nutrition major at Auburn University allowed me to reconnect with what motivates me most, science that directly improves daily living. My coursework has strengthened my understanding of human physiology and given me the analytical tools to interpret research and apply it to real world health outcomes. Studying nutrition has shown me how evidence based interventions can prevent disease, support long term wellness, and address the root causes of chronic conditions, an approach that aligns far more closely with my values than the medication centered model I experienced in pharmacy school. This shift not only confirmed that I had chosen the right path but also prepared me for the academic rigor of graduate study.

Pursuing an MS/DI program is the next essential step in my journey. I am eager to learn from experienced preceptors, apply my academic knowledge in diverse settings, and develop the skills necessary to provide high-quality, ethical, and culturally competent nutrition care. I am motivated by the opportunity to contribute to a program that values leadership, collaboration, and evidence-based practice. Most importantly, I am committed to upholding the professional standards that define the dietetics profession and to growing into a practitioner who leads with compassion, integrity, and scientific rigor.

Ultimately, I want to become an RDN who empowers individuals to take control of their health, supports communities through education and advocacy, and contributes to a more preventive, accessible, and patient-centered healthcare system. My journey, from pharmacy to nutrition, has taught me the importance of aligning my work with my values and it has strengthened my commitment to this field. I am excited to continue my training and take the next step toward becoming a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.
